The Buying Process - Step 2 - Saving for a deposit, our top tips
Saving for that deposit can sometimes be the hardest step. But it’s not impossible, especially with a little restraint and determination!
Here’s a couple of tips to help you on your way.
TIP 1 CREATE A SPECIAL ACCOUNT FOR YOUR HOME DEPOSIT
Work out how much you can afford to put away each payday. A direct transfer out of your everyday account into a special home account and you might not even notice it is gone.
TIP 2 PAY OFF YOUR DEBTS
Pay off any credit card balances or car loan so you’re not losing valuable home deposit dollars to interest on outstanding loans. If you can, chop up that credit card and use a debit card instead.
TIP 3 WHAT CAN YOU DO WITHOUT
Think hard, be tough and work out how you can eliminate unnecessary spending. Who would have thought that a daily takeout coffee would add up to over $1,000 a year? We all need a treat at times, but perhaps take a break on some luxury spending items each month.
TIP 4 EARN EXTRA DOLLARS
We all have stuff that we don’t need or use anymore. Look at auction sites and social media sites to make a few extra dollars. Or perhaps, look at getting a second job and have that pay directly deposited into your special home account.
TIP 5 MOVE BACK INTO THE FAMILY HOME
Whilst it’s not always the most appealing option, moving back into the family home while you save for your first home can help and speed up the savings process.
